Floral dresses for winter have to be one of my favorite looks for the season. Bringing in the pretty springtime print into these cold months feels fun and fresh and maybe helps me pretend (a little) that the warm weather will be here before we know it!
How To Wear A Floral Dress In The Winter
I picked up this floral dress at LOFT about 2 weeks ago and it's such a great staple to have in your closet. Paired with all-black accessories, the print really pops! Not to mention it's crazy comfortable, which we all know is super important this time of year when we're forced to pile on the layers to brave zero-degree wind chills.
If you're wanting to add florals to your winter wardrobe, I have a few tips to get you started and keep you warm. But first, let's shop for some floral dresses. shall we? Here are a few under $100 styles I found that can be worn with tights in the winter (like I did in this look) or with bare legs in the spring and summer!
Choose The Right Fabric For Winter
Leave the unlined linen dresses for the spring. Yes, they're pretty, they're flowy, but they will definitely leave you cold. For the winter, we want fabrics that have a little more weight to them. Something the air isn't going to breeze right through.
Knits and wool are already the go-to fabrics for the sweaters in your winter wardrobe, and they make fantastic dresses, too. I'll be honest, I haven't seen a ton of floral patterns on a sweater dress, but as far as fabric goes, you can't go wrong. And there are other ways you can incorporate this material into your look – more on that when we talk about layering.
Satin and crushed velvet are other winter-friendly fabrics for wearing florals – they're on the thicker side and they look so rich! I'd recommend sticking with a fabric that has a darker background color (think black, navy blue, or a deep red like the dress I'm wearing). Not only will the flowers pop, but you won't look like you're wearing a dress made for your beach vacation in the middle of a snowdrift.
Layering Your Floral Dress
Layering is key to staying comfortable in the winter. I dedicated an entire blog post to it recently – so yes, it's that important.
Black tights are basically a must for winter dress-wearing. No one wants that cold wind hitting their bare legs and blowing up their dress! From there, you can make a call on other pieces that might be needed based on the temperature. If you're wondering, my absolute favorite tights are the super affordable black opaque tights from Express.
If your dress doesn't have long sleeves, start there. You'll want to layer either with a long sleeve shirt underneath or a jacket or sweater over it. I love the look of a leather jacket with a winter floral. It's feminine but a little edgy all at the same time. I have also been known to add a sweater on top of a dress as I did with this maxi dress. Not only does this give added warmth, but it also changes up the look a little bit.
Winter Accessories
Accessories are meant to be fun. But in the winter, they also serve a purpose. When I wear a floral dress, I want the print to be the star of the show. That doesn't mean forgoing accessories altogether, it just means being smart about how you use them. In this look, I kept the print front and center by pairing it with neutral-colored accessories – black hat, cream scarf, black shoes.
You could also choose a color from your print and pull that color into your accessories. If you wear a floral print that has red in the flowers, for example, you could pull the red into your accessories. I did this with my sweater and headband in this look.
Again, have fun with this! I always say the best look is the one you feel great in! Have you added florals to your winter look? I'd love to hear how you "winterize" them!
